1. It removes what nothing else does
Carbon is excellent at chlorine, taste, and odor. It does essentially nothing for dissolved contaminants: total dissolved solids, arsenic, nitrate, PFAS. Those pass straight through a carbon or sediment filter. The RO membrane rejects them. 1. It costs more than anything else you would put in the house

2. It takes a mechanical room, not a closet
A whole house RO install is not one appliance. It's the RO frame, an atmospheric storage tank, and a repressurization pump, plus float switches to tie them together. Depending on household demand we are usually specifying a tank somewhere between 165 and 500 gallons. Put that next to the frame and the pump and you need a dedicated equipment area, a garage bay, or a basement corner. Plenty of homes are disqualified on geometry alone, before budget ever comes up.
3. It needs electricity, and it adds failure points
A whole house carbon filter is passive. Line pressure does the work and there's nothing to plug in. Whole house RO runs pumps, which means a circuit, pump maintenance, and float switches. When one of those fails you notice, because the house stops delivering water the way you expect. And because you are drawing from a tank rather than straight off the main, the system has to be sized to your real peak demand or you'll find the limit during back-to-back showers on laundry day.
4. Some water goes to drain
Every RO system sends rejected water to drain, and the industry is careless about which direction it quotes the ratio, so here is ours stated plainly. Our systems produce at minimum 1 gallon of purified water for every 1 gallon sent to drain, and in practice usually 2 to 3 gallons purified per 1 gallon of waste. 5. The water needs correcting before it hits your plumbing
This is the one that catches people who only read the marketing. The membrane strips the dissolved minerals that buffer pH along with the contaminants, so what comes off it is low in minerals and mildly aggressive. On a single drinking tap that is a taste question. On a whole house install it is a plumbing question, because that water is about to run through every line in the building. A whole house RO build is not finished at the membrane; it needs a remineralization or pH correction stage on the back end. 6. Pre-treatment is mandatory, and upkeep is ongoing
Chlorine damages membranes. Hardness scales them. Iron and silica foul them. What sits in front of the membrane decides how long the membrane lasts, and the gap is not small: matching the membrane class and pre-treatment to the actual feed water is the difference between a three year service life and an eighteen month one. So if a whole house RO quote doesn't include pre-treatment sized to your water test, it isn't a complete quote. Who Actually Needs a Whole House Reverse Osmosis System
It's the right call when
- Your test shows dissolved contaminants, for example arsenic, nitrate, or high dissolved solids, and you want them gone at every fixture rather than just the kitchen
- You have several dissolved problems at once, where no single conventional media handles the set
- Your feed water is brackish or high enough in dissolved solids that we would be specifying a brackish-class membrane
- Someone in the house has a medical reason to want purified water at every tap, bathing included
- You have the space, an available circuit, and a genuine willingness to pre-treat, maintain, and remineralize
A different system fits better when
- Your complaint is chlorine taste or smell. A whole house carbon filter fixes that for far less money and nothing to plug in.
- Your complaint is scale, spotting, or crusty fixtures. That's hardness, and a softener or anti-scale system addresses it directly.
- Your complaint is sediment, iron, or a rotten-egg smell. Those are sediment and oxidation problems, not membrane problems.
- You are on municipal water with no specific dissolved-contaminant finding. Most treated city supplies do not justify whole house RO.
- What you actually care about is what you drink and cook with. An under-sink RO gives you the same purified water at the point where it matters.
- You have not tested your water yet. Buying the most aggressive treatment made before knowing what you are treating is the most expensive way to guess.

Almost every whole house RO service call we take traces back to one of these, and all of them are specification problems rather than equipment problems.
- The system or the tank was undersized, and often both. Everything keeps up fine until two showers and a load of laundry overlap, and then the house runs the tank down faster than the membrane can refill it. Production and storage both get sized to your worst hour, not your daily average.
- Nobody measured the room. An atmospheric storage tank in the 165 to 500 gallon range is a serious piece of equipment, and we regularly see installs planned around the RO frame alone. Walk the space with the tank footprint and ceiling height in hand before anything ships.
- Pre-treatment was skipped or under-specified. This is the expensive one. A membrane fed unprotected water can foul within months instead of running its full service life, and the owner usually blames the membrane.
- No remineralization stage. The build stops at the membrane, and low-mineral water goes straight into the home's plumbing. Correcting it later costs more than including it up front.
- A float switch sticks. The tank overflows or the system never refills. It is a cheap part causing an alarming symptom, which is why we walk owners through testing them by hand.
- The symptom is not the cause. Low pressure at the taps is almost never the distribution pump. It is usually an empty tank, because the booster slowed down, because a pre-filter is fouled. Start at the front of the system and work backward.
